Everybody loves this place!
This universally appealing basement bar has a unique mix of superbly presented music, a stylish but non-trendy environment, great bar service, and a non-stop stimulating creative buzz. There’s three or more gigs a day, seven nights a week, with an amazing, ever-changing programme of extra-high quality Jazz, Funk, Soul, Blues, Acoustic, Singers, Jam Sessions, and our 17-piece(!) Big Band ... all good stuff.

All that is why THE JAZZ BAR has won SIX major awards!

WE HAVE THREE MUSIC TIME-ZONES (plus afternoon sessions on Sat/Sun)
1. TEATIME ACOUSTIC (6.30-8.30pm Tue-Sun)
- Singer/Songwriters acoustic sessions, Free entry
2. EARLY GIG (9-12, Every Single Night)
- The best of jazz and other excellent music, local and international touring bands.
3. LATE N' LIVE (12-3am, Every Single Night)
- A mix of mostly funky/electric live bands supported on Fri/Sat by a bit of DJ action.

The Vibe
The internal ambience is modern and upbeat, with atmospheric bare stone walls, polished wood floor, comfy alcove seating, smart lighting and designer furniture, enhanced by art exhibitions. 'A real New York vibe - right here in the heart of Edinburgh!'

There's always a wide audience age-range, a diverse assortment of music fans, tourists, locals, musicians, and students. Even those who do not regard themselves as 'jazz fans' enjoy the great live performance atmosphere. And there's a lot more than just 'Jazz' on every night.

As well as regularly featuring Scotland's top jazz performers, some world-famous jazz names have played here, eg US sax gurus Ravi Coltrane & Jerry Bergonzi, US jazz/funk drummers Lenny White (Chick Corea), Jojo Mayer, Billy Hart and Omar Hakim (Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, Weather Report, Sting, Madonna etc), London sax star Peter King, US bassist Buster Williams (Miles Davis, Art Blakey), and US Hammond Organ genius Tony Monaco, plus many others.

Independent Quotes from Impressed Customers:
Want to know what people think of this place? Answer: always 4 or 5 stars!
Here's some unsolicited, independent quotes from visitors:

"Gorgeous ... Great atmosphere, rarely cliched, always a joy!"
"A great dingy basement jazz bar - but without the dingy!"
"There's not many other places worth being in town"
"Extremely talented musicians ... there is ALWAYS music on"
"Great atmosphere, awesome music, and good times"
"Add an extra star - I can't see how this place could ever not get five!"
"Seriously good live music - without the price you'd pay elsewhere"
"The quality of musicians is almost always superb ... boasting some of the country's finest young jazz musicians"
"An excellent evening means ending up here! The live music calender is superb and the variety will astound."
"I came to visit the Jazz Bar tonight with my girlfriend, and we both thought that the music, atmosphere and bar service was absolutely superb. I would recommend the Jazz Bar to anyone!"

Opening Times/Access/Age Restriction
Open Mon-Fri 5pm, Sat 2.30pm, Sun 5pm (2.30 if there's an afternoon gig)
Close 3am nightly (or is that 'morning'?) - except for various 'Festivals' in July, August and Xmas/New Year, when we have a 2-hour Festival extension (yep - bar to 5am!)

Our Edinburgh City Council Licence states that under-18s are not admitted after 8pm, and we are not allowed to admit under-6s at any time. However, accompanied 'young adults' (14-17) can come to the Saturday or Sunday afternoon Jazz gigs, or the 'Teatime Acoustic' sessions, up to 8pm.

It is our regret that due to the nature of the (old) basement premises, access is by stairs down, and there is no space for any form of disabled access. Also there's no disabled toilet. We sincerely apologise for this, but there's nothing we can do about it.
It would be possible to carry a wheelchair with occupant down/up the stairs. City Council Regulations state that wheelchair users will have to be accompanied by able assistants who will remain with them at all times, and be ready to carry the chair plus occupant down and back up the stairs.
